Barely Texas aims at becoming an innovative, up-and-coming counter-culture identity. Barely Texas is a self-awareness experimentation of a desalination process. It is about learning to embrace who are as a West Texas town, by first eliminating all the things we are not. Learning to appreciate the things we have, and not dwell on all the things we are reneged.
Why? Because we don’t say ‘ya’ll” unless we are expected to and do so in a contrived exposition, instead of a social reflex mannerism. We have our own language. We live in the desert and we don’t eat our menudo with tortillas, or call gorditas “puffy tacos”. We still catch non-digital channels on our televisions.
Being Barely Texas is an all encompassing identity. Geographically, El Paso is the only in Texas in with a mountain completely within its boundaries. We are the only city in Texas on Mountain Time zone and city with the highest elevation. Demographically, we are the largest Hispanic community in the state (by percentage). Only HarrisCounty (Houston) has a higher Hispanic population with 1.5 million Hispanics.
Barely Texas is us-Barely Texas is here – and we need to stop feeling inferior or feel a need to compete with Austin, Houston, Dallas, or even San Antonio in aspects that will always lead to disappointment. When we are so different it becomes nearly impossible to gauge our development with another city’s barometer. Progress must increase from a better self-awareness of our community in order to have an improved understanding of how we can enhance our surroundings and quality of life. If Las Vegas thrived in the middle of nowhere, why can’t we grow? This bi-national metropolis is 2 million strong -We’re not going anywhere just yet, but we need to get started.
